Tweak Settings

This document pertains to cPanel 11.25. For cPanel 11.24 documentation click here.

On this page, you can configure a number of settings related to the functionality of cPanel, WHM, and associated services.

To enable an option, make sure the checkbox next to that option is checked, and then click on the Save button at the bottom of the screen.

note Note: The following options are in the same order as they appear on the Tweak Settings page.

Display

Show Hide

The login theme to display for cPanel Login.

Enter the name of your desired login theme — the theme your cPanel users will see on the login screen, as they sign into their accounts. (This is separate from your cPanel theme, WHM theme, or webmail theme.) You can view the available themes by clicking the Universal Theme Manager link.

Number (or all) of accounts to display per page in list accounts.

Specify the number of user accounts you wish WHM to display per page when you access the List Accounts feature. You may also enter all to view all of your accounts.

Domains

Show Hide

Allow users to park subdomains of the server's hostname main domain.

For example, if your main domain name is example.com, this would allow a user to redirect user.example.com visitors to that user’s website.

Allow users to Park/Addon Domains on top of domains owned by other users.

Using this option, you can allow users to park domains, or create addon domains, owned by other users on your server.

ALERT! Warning: Clicking this box is discouraged as it would allow users to park domains on top of domains they do not own.

Allow creation of Parked/Addon Domains that resolve to other servers.

This option allows users to park domains or create addon domains that resolve to other servers.

ALERT! Warning: Clicking this box is strongly discouraged, as it could create a major security problem. If you must allow this, be sure not to let users park common Internet domains.

Allow resellers to create accounts with subdomains of the server's hostname main domain.

This option allows resellers to create subdomains of the server's main domain. For example, if your main domain name is example.com, this would allow a reseller to redirect user.example.com visitors to the reseller’s website.

Allow Creation of Parked/Addon Domains that are not registered.

Click the checkbox to let users create parked and addon domains that are not registered with a valid registrar.

Automatically create A entries for the registered nameservers.

By enabling this option, A entries are automatically created for new domains' nameservers, if they would be contained in the same zone. An A entry is the DNS record responsible for resolving hostnames to IP addresses.

Prevent users from parking/adding on common internet domains.

Enabling this option prevents users from parking on or adding common Internet domain names.

PICK Important: Clicking this box is strongly encouraged.

Check zone file syntax when saving and syncing zones.

When this option is enabled, WHM will check zone file syntax when saving and syncing zones. This ensures that the data is written to the file correctly when saving DNS information.

Application for processing DNS requests.

Leave the box blank to use WHM's default application for processing DNS requests (dnsadmin). If you would prefer to use a different application, enter the path to the application in the available field.

Add proxy VirtualHost to httpd.conf

This option will automatically create entries that redirect visitors to the correct port when they access the following subdomains:

  • cpanel.example.com
  • webmail.example.com
  • webdisk.example.com
  • whm.example.com

note Note: This feature requires mod_rewrite and mod_proxy.

Automatically create proxy subdomain DNS entries.

Enabling this option will allow WHM to automatically create DNS entries for the following 4 subdomains for every user’s account (where example.com stands for the user’s domain):

  • cpanel.example.com
  • webmail.example.com
  • webdisk.example.com
  • whm.example.com

note Note: These subdomains allow users to easily access the features included with a cPanel installation.

PICK Important: You must add DNS entries for these subdomains to work. You may use /scripts/proxydomains to create DNS entries manually.

Allow users to override automatically generated proxy subdomains.

Enabling this option allows users to create their own subdomains that override the cpanel, webmail, webdisk, and whm subdomains that are automatically generated. This means, for example, a user would be able to direct visitors accessing cpanel.example.com to a web page he configures, such as mycontrolpanel.example.com.

Prevent users from creating subdomains outside of their public_html directory.

Enabling this option allows users to create subdomains outside their individual ~/public_html/ directories.

Ignore configured nameservers and set the NS line to the authoritative ones.

Click the checkbox to ignore nameservers specified when adding registered domains. Enabling this option causes the domain's authoritative (registered) nameservers to be used instead.

Logging

Show Hide

Log dnsadmin requests to /user/local/cpanel/logs/dnsadmin.log

Enabling this option will cause any requests sent to or from dnsadmin to be logged in the following log file:

Enable verbose DNS zone syncing

Enabling this option will cause DNS information to be printed to the command-line interface whenever DNS zones are syncronized.

PICK Remember: This feature is intended for testing purposes only. Do not enable this option on production servers.

Mail

PICK Important: Any changes made to SpamAssassin's configuration may require you to run the following script before your changes take effect:

  • /usr/bin/sa-compile
Show Hide
Catch-all/default address behavior for new accounts.

Choose how you would like to configure your catch-all/default address behavior. The catch-all or default address handles email sent to nonexistent users on your server's domains. It is useful to keep in mind that spammers frequently use Directory Harvest Attacks to try to guess recipient usernames at known domains. Thus, a domain may receive a large number of spam messages sent to nonexistent users, costing you server resources.

  • fail — Checks for the intended email recipient and, if no matching recipient is found, denies the SMTP request before downloading the message.
    • note Note: This option is recommended.
  • blackhole — Discards the message after downloading it. This option uses system resources.
  • localuser — Allows users to set up their own catch-all email addresses. These email accounts will mainly serve to collect spam.

Silently Discard all FormMail-clone requests with a bcc: header.

Using this option, you can silently discard all email messages sent from the FormMail clone application with a bcc: header. These messages are typically spam.

Allow mail account authentication using the domain owner's password.

This option allows a user to sign into any email account on his domain using the account owner's system password.

Number of minutes between mail server queue runs.

In the box, enter the number of minutes between mail server queue runs. In a queue run, the mail server checks to see whether new messages need to be delivered. New mail will wait in the queue if, for example, it is undeliverable or it exceeds the maximum number of messages a user can send in the allotted time.

Track the origin of messages.

This option lets you track the origin of messages sent through your mail server software, if you are using Exim 4.34 or later. This option adds X-Source headers to email messages sent from a PHP script on your server, detailing the script's location. It can be useful for locating insecure email scripts being abused by spammers.

The maximum each domain can send out per hour.

In the box, enter the maximum number of email messages that each domain on your server will be permitted to send per hour. Entering 0 in this field allows each domain to send an unlimited number of emails.

Prevent the user nobody from sending out mail.

You can use this option to prevent the system user nobody from sending mail to addresses that are not hosted on your server. Nobody is the default system account under which PHP and CGI will run. This option can be useful when attempting to prevent spammers from using CGI or PHP on your server to generate outgoing mail. If you would like to see the user who is executing PHP or CGI, you will need to activate PHPsuEXEC or suEXEC respectively.

Include a list of Pop before SMTP senders.

Selecting this option will include a list of email addresses belonging to the user in the headers of his outgoing emails. POP before SMTP is an email protocol that allows users to check email from different IPs. When this option is enabled, your mail server will append a list of email addresses the user checks using this protocol to the outgoing email's POP-before-SMTP header. As this measure may compromise the privacy of your users, enabling it is not recommended unless absolutely necessary.

note Note: This feature requires exim 4.34-30 or later.

BoxTrapper Spam Trap

This option enables the BoxTrapper spam trap. BoxTrapper requires incoming mail to be verified by the sender before it is delivered to the recipient's inbox.

Horde Webmail

Click the checkbox to enable Horde webmail. Horde is a webmail client, which allows users to check email through a web browser rather than an email client. For more information, see http://www.horde.org/imp/.

Mailman

This option lets you enable Mailman. Mailman handles mailing lists in the cPanel/WHM interface, allowing you to send mail to multiple accounts while addressing mail to a single email address. For more information, see http://www.gnu.org/software/mailman/index.html.

RoundCube Webmail

Select this option to enable RoundCube Webmail. RoundCube is a webmail client, which allows users to check email through a web browser rather than an email client. For more information, see http://roundcube.net/.

SpamAssassin Spam Filter

This option lets you enable the SpamAssassin spam filter. SpamAssassin blocks spam by scanning incoming mail for spam-like traits and assigning each message a score. If incoming mail exceeds your predefined score limit, the mail will be discarded or placed in a special folder (see below). For more information, see http://spamassassin.apache.org/.

SpamAssassin Spam Box

Select this option to enable the SpamAssassin spam box. This feature will store incoming mail that has been marked as spam to a special folder. This is useful in preserving mail that may have been mislabeled as spam.

SquirrelMail webmail

Using this option, you can enable SquirrelMail webmail. SquirrelMail is a webmail client, which allows users to check email through a web browser rather than an email client. For more information, see http://www.squirrelmail.org/.

Add the mail. prefix for mailman URLs.

Click the checkbox to add the mail. prefix to Mailman URLs. For example, if your domain is example.com, you would log into your Mailman mailing list software at http://mail.example.com/mailman.

Compress interface pages using gzip.

Click the checkbox to compress the pages of the WHM and cPanel interfaces using the gzip compression format when you access WHM and cPanel via your domain name. Accessing WHM and cPanel this way counts toward your site’s total bandwidth, so selecting this option can help minimize this type of bandwidth usage.

Disable use of compiled dnsadmin.

This option lets you disable the use of the compiled DNSAdmin program. DNSAdmin is a program that helps simplify management of your DNS data. By clicking this checkbox, you are enabling the use of system Perl modules within custom DNSAdmin hooks, which is necessary for customizing your implementation of DNSAdmin. However, clicking this option also increases the time DNSAdmin takes to execute functions.

Allow Sharing Nameserver Ips.

Enable this option to allow your users to share nameserver IPs. Enabling this feature will decrease the number of IPs that need to be in your IP pool.

Disable Disk Quota display caching.

When this option is enabled, WHM will not cache disk quota and usage information. If this option is left unchecked, WHM will cache this data, resulting in the displayed disk usage information being up to 15 minutes out of date.

ALERT! Warning: Selecting this option could result in a large performance degradation on your server.

Disable login with root or reseller password.

Selecting this option will disable your ability to log into cPanel with the root or reseller password, and will disable the cPanel Switch Account drop-down menu for applicable themes. Normally, the root user or reseller can log into a user’s cPanel account using the account username and the root user’s or reseller’s password, maintaining root or reseller privileges.

Try to resolve each client's IP to a domain name.

Enable this if you want cPanel to attempt to resolve users’ IP addresses into domain names when they log into cPanel.

ALERT! Warning: Selecting this option can degrade your server’s performance.

The minimum filesystem quota space in MB.

In the text box, enter the minimum amount of disk space (in Megabytes) required to remain after a file is uploaded through the cPanel File Manager. A user will not be able to upload a file if this minimum is not present in the filesystem, on top of the disk space required by the file itself. This prevents users from meeting disk space usage quotas through File Manager uploads. The default value is 5 MB.

The maximum number of directories deep to look for .htaccess files.

Enter the maximum number of directories deep to look for .htaccess files, relative to the user's home directory. You can enter a value between 0 and 100. The default value is 2. Values higher than 2 are discouraged because they can degrade your server's performance.

If your user's home directory was /home/user, and this value were set to 2, when searching for .htaccess files the following directories would be searched:

  • /home/user/
  • /home/user/directory1/
  • /home/user/directory1/directory2/

While the following directory would not be searched:

  • /home/user/directory1/directory2/directory3/

Do not warn about features that will be deprecated.

Select this option if you do not want to be warned about features which will become deprecated in future releases of WHM and cPanel.
